Patch 3369 contains several important fixes, but Mac users might be most excited about the availability of render-to-texture support (detailed shadows, motion blur, headlights, the DM-Morpheus scoreboard, etc). Destineer subsidiary MacSoft on Monday announced that it is shipping the Mac version of Unreal Tournament 2004. The news comes less than two weeks after the PC version of Epic Games' hotly anticipated first person shooter was released. MacSoft said that U.S. retail stores should see copies by the end of the week. European retailers can expect to have their copies in stock within two weeks.
Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT 2K4) is the latest iteration of the enormously popular futuristic gladiatorial action game. In UT 2K4, you go head-to-head against computer controlled 'bots' or other humans playing on the Internet or on Local Area Networks (LANs). Mac and PC gamers can play on the same networks.

UT 2K4 differs from its predecessor with the addition of land and air vehicles, new weaponry like mines, rocket-propelled grenades and stationary gun turrets, new arenas, giant battlefields, and new game types -- the return of Assault, which was last featured on the original Unreal Tournament, and Onslaught. Another new feature for UT 2K4 is the 'UnrealTV' system, which lets hundreds of UT 2K4 users log on and watch other players duke it out.
System requirements call for a G4/933MHz or faster with Mac OS X v10.2.8 or higher, 256MB RAM, 32MB AGP video system; DVD drive, and 6GB of hard disk space (that's right, 6GB). An Internet or LAN connection is required for online play. MacSoft notes that some maps and game modes may be playable on 800MHz systems as well.
Unreal Tournament 2004 costs about $40. If you own the previous release, Unreal Tournament 2003, you can get a $10 mail-in rebate.
