You'll find JGB changed styles much like the Dead did. From the more simple R&B and country styles of the early 70's (Legion of Mary + Old and in the way), to the more laid back late 70's (JGB + Reconstruction), to the reggae/rock early 80's and then a slow transformation to the gospel sounding 90's. I think up to the 90's, the GD and JGB's styles sort of mirrored each other. But as JGB got more 'Shining Star' gospel style, the GD's music became stagnant. And from what I saw and what I've read, Jerry looked like he had a lot more fun at JGB shows then he did at Dead shows towards the end.
I personally think '81 through spring '84 is the best period for the JGB (also my favorite period of GD)Going back now and having access to so many shows, post '86 Garcia doesn't do much for me. His playing rarely had the speed, precision or intensity in the late 80's and 90's as it did pre '86.

Fall '83 - Lots of excellent sounding boards from this tour. 11/25, 11/27, 12/2, 12/3...the list goes on. All of these shows are killer.
