Canon PhotoStitch is a simple and free program by Canon to create panoramic images from sequences of partially overlapping photos. The program allows four options depending on the type of panorama involved : horizontal, vertical, matrix or 360 degree panoramas.
The photographs are loaded individually or in groups by just dragging them into the program's main window. The photographs are sorted and the program creates a panorama out of them. If an error happens at any seam between pictures, the program allows to explore the seam and manually place the bound.

Creation Of A Panorama With PhotoStitch
PhotoStitch can create panoramas by stitching togheter up to 26 pictures taken sequentially. For this demonstration we'll use the same batch of fourteen pictures that we've used for other examples which you can download here and which we'll locate for this example on the C:/Panorama folder :
When starting PhotoStitch the first window that opens is a Canon front end that launches applications. We'l need to click on the indicated button to get PhotoStitch actually started :
Then the main PhotoStitch window opens ready to open files or to load images on its first tab named Selection and Arrangement :
It is enough to select on any program the images to be stitched and drag the selection into the open PhotoStitch window to trigger the process of loading files :
While PhotoStitch opens the image files a progress indicator shows us details of the process as it happens :
Once all the images have been opened we can see thumbnails of each one on the program's main window. It is time to sort them :
We find an error in the sequence automatically loaded by the program. As it can be seen on the image, original_07 is occupaying the original_08's place and viceversa :
It only takes to drag any of the images to its right position for the sequence now to be correctly sorted :
We'll use this occasion to try out other image sequence edition tools. The Switch button allows to invert the picture's order :
However pictures ordered this way would not correctly blend into a panorama :
Consequently we'll discard the use of the Switch tool for this example. The Rotate tool lets us rotate all the images at once or just those which had been previously seleted :
We have rotated an image but as we can see, this tools has no utility for our example's case so we'll discard the changes :
Next we'll click on the Arrange button to display this tool's options menu :
Out of the four options we find on the displayed menu, we'll choose 360 Degree because this is the output format we want :
The Arrange button now shows the icon corresponding to 360 degree panoramas :
Once established the type of ordering we are ready to go on to the next tab named Merge. To explore the options we'll click on the Merge Options button :
A new window of the program opens then where we must confirm the photographing technique we have used at the time of capturing images. The options are Panning, Paralel Camera Movement and Images Scanned by Sections. The default option (Panning) is the one better describing the photographing technique we have used and so we'll confirm it. The focal distance has been automatically calculated by the program :
Once the stitching options are set and the corresponding window is closed, back on the main window we see that the last photo in the sequence is now at the beggining completing the idea of a 360 degree panorama. To get its creation started it is enoguh with clicking on the Start button :
A progress indicator shows us details of the process as it goes :
Simultaneously, PhotoStitch's main window shows step by step the creation of the panorama in real time :
The panorama has been created. Everything at a glance appears to be fine. We are ready to move on to the third tab named Save :
Upon loading the new tab we see the panorama encircled by a frame which suggest a cropping line to discard incomplete areas of the picture. We can accept this automatic crop suggestion or correct it by dragging the lines over the image. We'll click in the Adjust Image button to check the loaded configuration :
The image adjustment's window then pops up. It is important that the Crop checkbox is checked for the areas selected as discarded are actually left out of the panorama to be created. In our example we won't modify the image size to save it in full quality. About the image format, we'll select Normal for being a 360 degree panorama and we'll close the window by clicking on Close :
We are ready to save the created panorama to a new file by clicking on the Save button :
A dialog window opens then to specify the file's details. There is also an Options button which we'll test :
In the new dialog window that opens we can choose any of three combinations between quality and compression of the file according to our own preferences. Once again we'll choose to confirm the default value which is high image quality :
After confirming by clicking on OK the window closes and we get back to the previous dialog window, where it only remains to specify a location and a name for the file we are ready to create :
By clicking on Save a progress indicator pops up anticipating the process's short waiting time :
A new window suggests us to see the saved image, confirming this way that the file already exists. In case we accept the suggestion, the panorama will open in a new window :
The window that appears after accepting contains the panorama loaded on the 360Viewer program, the one we haven't opted for on the first step of this demonstration. It is an interactive panorama viewer from Canon Inc. which allows to navigate inside them by dragging the mouse's cursor over the image while keeping its main button pressed down :
At the location we had picked for it and named the way we had choosen is the created file :
The created panorama looks like this. Click on the image to open the full sized version of it :
While the panorama looks fairly good, a closer look reveals some defects. For example, near the upper right corner there is a mismatch at the door's frame :
To try to improve it we'll go back to the Merge tab and click on the Display Seams button :
Now we can see each conjuction apart and click on the one we mind about :
Then a new window opens where we'll try to correct the automatic stitching result. To pause the automatic adjustment we'll remove the tick from the Auto Adjust Overlap checkbox :
Clicking with the mouse over one of the images we'll drag it above the other until the matching areas coincide. Due to a certain displacement between the pictures it's not so easy to mark an exact place :
After confirming the manual adjustment the Amend Merge Results window closes and in the main PhotoStitch window the panorama is quickly updated. We are ready to go on to the Save tab :
With a click on Save we'll start the creation of the new file :
In the dialog window that opens we'll name the edited panorama a different name from the one previously created :
We can then get the file creation started :
In the choosen location we find this file togheter with the first one :
This is what the manually adjusted panorama looks like. Click on the image to open the full sized version of it :
Checking out the edited defect we ascertain that the manual adjustment hasn't been enough to improve the stitching the program had done by itself :
Although both panoramas are almost identical we finally choose the one created automatically by PhotoStitch :
The process was fast and easy and the automatically created panorama is well stitched and satisfactory in our opinion.
